Popping in to the GameBoard a few weeks ago, I had the chance to learn this wonderful game. I got to play it with 3 people that day and we found ourselves easily able to beat the advancing hordes of monsters in a fully cooperative experience. I liked the game so much that I bought a copy for an upcoming gaming day with a group of students and alumni. Playing it fully cooperative with six people presented a different dynamic requiring lots of dialog and direction. Even though it was new to three of the six people, it was quickly learned and very well liked. I taught my wife in about 10 minutes and she has enjoyed playing it as well.
The rules are simple, can easily be modified to increase or decrease challenge level and every time we've played there has been a good level of suspense right up to our final rounds. I can easily see this game a a family favorite and know it will continue to get lots of use at our games club at Lutheran High.
Once again, learning to play the game with such good teachers at the GameBoard made this acquisition a great addition to my collection!

Well, I finally gave in and bought my first Zombie genre game. It's not that I don't like the concepts behind the many games in this genre, I just never thought I would really like them much. Zombie Dice changed my mind just a little bit.
Since there are lots of places to see how to play, I won't take the time to explain the rules. Zombie dice is basically a push-your-luck dice game. Yes it could be played with numbers or abstract symbols on the dice faces but the brains, footsteps and shotgun blasts work really well and tie the game theme together. I like the way the green dice are less risky than the yellow or the red, enhancing the decision-making strategy which makes this a bit better than just your average dice roller type game. It takes a short time to play, usually under 10 minutes and works well as a filler game between other games.
Having discovered the Adventurers game by AEG a few months ago, I couldn't help but think Zombie Dice could be a cool addition to an expansion with a new temple or archaeological find. Maybe making ones own new exploration type game cobbling various smaller mini games together would be a fun new challenge for the summer! Combine a Pirates of the Spanish Main set of ships and an Isle of the Dead where you and your opponents could play a round of Zombie Dice to garner treasure... follow up with some other islands that would require similarly added games and an afternoon could easily become a great campaign for one and all.
I guess any game that triggers thoughts to modify and augment play is worth a purchase and if you're looking for great purchases... you will find them at the GameBoard. (Heh... that's not a bad commercial plug, Lynn, is it?)  Grin

A few years ago, I discovered this great game from Internet sources and decided to invest in a copy. The full sized version originally had two sections next to the start platform that were covered with a dry-erase surface with which you could keep track of score. Simple rules with lots of room for variations made it a hit with my after school games club. The basic game can be played in just about 10 minutes by each person casting one of their four dice down the multi-level board, attempting to get their dice to land on the lowest levels which multiply the pip value and score the highest points. Since this is a turn based game, each person in turn can play for points or may try the strategy of knocking other players dice from the platforms. Skill and luck blend well in this game and playing four rounds with the winner having the highest score makes it a simple game but with lots of dynamics. You can also play a version with a set winning point like 100 or 200 so whoever meets this first wins. I like it because it allows for a variety of playing techniques and also stimulates math skills at the same time.
My brother and I discussed all sorts of possible variations including multi-sided polyhedral dice. Using some of the dice as positives and some as negatives would really ramp up the math elements as would using dice with a special symbol like a skull and crossbones that curse the level it lands on. Others on the web have created extra zone circles that create negatives if your die falls off the board. I like those because it heightens the value of the positioning of your dice much like in shuffleboard or in curling. It also makes those who just cast the dice to knock others off a bit more tricky because your casting usually involves the loss of your die in order to take someone else's off too.
This one gets a high recommendation from me... it's fun and simple with enough depth to keep it fresh for years to come.

Recently while visiting the GameBoard I had the pleasure of being introduced to Yamslam a simple, fast game by Blue Orange Games. The game is in a self-contained tin that organizes the quality components and also provides a neat dicing surface that keeps the two-toned, six-sideds from dancing off the table and skittering under feet. Each person rolls five dice and can set aside and re-roll them much like Yahtzee or Kismet. After up to three rolls, one then chooses a poker chip that matches the outcome of your five dice. This could be a simple two pair or a straight of five dice with more points allotted to more difficult outcomes and less to easier ones. Though much of this game does rely on the luck factor like Yahtzee or Kismet, bonuses for capturing all the chips of a single category or capturing at least one of every chip make this game different than the others. When the last chip is taken, the game is done and you score by adding your chip values and any bonuses. Some variations are provided to up the replay value and they, along with the quick play and simple rules make this a solid game in my opinion. This isn't a massive strategy-fest but can easily be played while still having conversation, a cold root beer and your favorite brand of pretzels! Since there are some nice rewards for snabbing up difficult chips or going for a set of easy ones, I think there is enough to keep Yamslam as a nice filler game, one that, like Yahtzee and Kismet, you can go back to time and time again.
